A Hat-Trick For Local Landscaping Company

A local landscaper is celebrating after winning a hat trick of awards at the Association of Landscape Contractors Ireland (ALCI) annual awards ceremony. Thomas Crummy, who owns and operates the Boyle based business Thomas J Crummy Landscaping entered 3 landscape gardens into this year’s competition gaining an award of merit for each garden.

Two of the awards were for gardens created were in the Private / Residential Category, one located in Boyle and the other in Sligo and the remaining award was for the contract that Crummy had completed for Wexford RHU.  Hearing of his success the Cliffords whose garden in Boyle was particularly praised by the judges said they were thrilled with the news and that they were pleasantly surprised with the speed and quality of execution. We asked Thomas to plant a border along the front wall and he came up with some fantastic ideas which we would never have dreamt about but decided to run with. He started the project when he said he would and consulted with us all the way through. We are very proud of our new front garden and the comments which were made by the judges were most complimentary.

The Annual Association of Landscape Contractors of Ireland (ALCI) Landscape Awards took place in the Thomas Prior Hall, Ballsbridge, Dublin, on 18th October and were presented by Tom Hayes T.D., Minister of State with responsibility for Horticulture at the Dept of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The awards, known as the Oscars of the landscaping industry, pay tribute to ALCI members who demonstrate exceptionally high standards of professionalism and skill in the execution of a wide variety of landscape projects. Judges this year were Dr Christy Boylan, Landscape Consultant, Secretary IFPRA Europe, Vice-President IFPRA and Gary Graham, Bloom Manager, DME Amenity Horticulture Bord Bia.

Peter O’Toole, President of the ALCI commented: “ALCI members have been designing and building Ireland’s gardens for over 40 years. Now, more than ever with the black economy booming, it is reassuring to clients to know that the ALCI brand guarantees the contractor’s commitment to quality standards.”

Thomas Crummy remarked: “We are very pleased to have won three National Awards, especially being up against such a high caliber of contractors in our industry. I owe a special commendation to Joan, Tom & Pat for their combined efforts and continued focus on delivering a bespoke service from our client’s first enquiry right through to project handover. It is a fantastic achievement and a real testimony to our focus on providing a highly professional, customer centric service to our valued customers. ”

He also said “I’m especially proud of winning an award for the landscaping at Wexford Residential Healthcare Unit.

This was a site which beyond doubt demonstrated that the saying “every problem creates an opportunity” is true in terms of landscape architecture. It started as a particularly difficult project due to the extreme difference in ground levels which left parts of the project accessible only by crane & teleporter. With the inclusion of beautifully planted internal courtyards, roof-garden and ground level gardens, this project truly gives a place of solace to both patients and staff.”

Bloom Manager and Judge Gary Graham said “Wexford RHU was some of best plant establishment we saw on our travels and the impact on an otherwise hard landscape was dramatic and that the building was designed to maximise the use of external space including a number of internal courtyards and the staff and patients were clearly benefiting from access to the lush planting.”

Gary also commented regarding Thomas’s Award for a local Residential Garden that “it was definitely one of the best large front gardens that we have seen over the 5 years of judging. Essentially, a soft landscaping project, the client agreed to a complete transformation of a front lawn on a busy road. The bold planting scheme uses pleached limes and large groups of single coloured plants in dramatic blocks with evergreens and clipped box to maintain year-round interest.”

Thomas also acknowledged the success of local Ardcarne Garden Centre at the Awards. Thomas himself has been a member of the ALCI for over 14 years. It is committed to the development of the landscape industry by ensuring quality of workmanship, best practice, reliability and emphasis on training. It recognises the excellence of landscape design and build achieved by its members through the annual all-Ireland Awards which have been running for 30 years.
